At the 2025 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), former Trump adviser Steve Bannon became the center of a swirling controversy. During his speech on February 21, a gesture he made appeared to resemble a Nazi salute, stirring significant backlash. This move was quickly likened to a previous event, where Elon Musk made a similar gesture at Donald Trump’s inaugural rally in January, which the Anti-Defamation League publicly condemned for trivializing the atrocities of the Nazi regime.
Jordan Bardella, a leading figure within France's far-right National Rally party, was scheduled to speak at CPAC. However, he opted to cancel his appearance in response to what he described as an urgent need to distance himself from any associations with 'Nazi ideology.' Bardella's response aimed to draw a clear line between his political stance and the symbolism many perceive in Nazi salutes, which remain a sensitive subject globally.
Bannon, however, brushed aside the allegations, maintaining that his gesture was nothing more than an enthusiastic wave to attendees. Looking to shift the narrative, Bannon vehemently criticized Bardella's decision to withdraw, labeling him as 'gutless.' Refusing to step back, Bannon took a further step by questioning Bardella’s leadership abilities, casting doubt on the strength of Bardella's political acumen.
This isn't the first time CPAC has faced such scrutiny for controversial gestures or statements. The absence of a public statement from CPAC organizers addressing the situation added fuel to the debate, leaving many attendees and spectators speculating about the conference's stance on maintaining decorum and the boundaries of political expression.
The repeated instances of gestures reminiscent of Nazi symbolism underscore the challenges facing political assemblies in balancing free speech with respectful acknowledgment of historical realities. Meanwhile, Bannon remains unrepentant in the face of criticism, defending his actions by emphasizing personal expression over assumed connotations. The episode reflects the broader tensions at play within political discourse, where historical awareness and contemporary expression occasionally find themselves at odds.
