St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner, and across Northern Ireland, community celebrations promise a day full of excitement. However, with excitement comes inevitable road closures and traffic disruptions that locals and visitors should be aware of. Key areas set to experience activities include Belfast, Newry, Downpatrick, Armagh, Omagh, and Enniskillen.
In the south area, festivities kick off in Downpatrick with a cavalcade starting at Ardglass Road during midday, followed by a parade that begins assembly at 1pm and ends by 3:30pm. Families can look forward to various activities in St Patrick Square. Over in Newry, the parade makes its way from Buttercrane Quay to The Mall starting at 1pm. Kilkeel and Warrenpoint will also host their own unique processions.
Major Events in Belfast and Other Key Cities
Meanwhile, in Belfast City Centre, the SPAR Craic 10K will take place early in the morning, with rolling road closures impacting areas from City Hall to Ormeau Park until 11am. Later in the day, Belfast’s lively parade kicks off at City Hall at 1:30pm, looping through streets like Chichester and High and causing various road closures around Donegall Square and other central locations. On-street parking will be restricted in several areas, so it’s advisable to plan alternatives.
Things get underway early in Armagh City with the 1st Armagh Scouts gathering at Navan Street to parade to St Patrick's Cathedral. Another significant event, the Celebrations Committee Parade, will start at 2pm from Christian Brothers Primary School. Moving to Omagh and Enniskillen, both regions have parades scheduled for the afternoon, ensuring roads are bustling with cultural displays and marching bands.
General advice suggests that anyone not participating in the events should expect delays and seek alternative routes. Public transport is set to be affected, with some services potentially being redirected. Also, parking restrictions will be in full force, especially in central city locations, and street traders must ensure they have valid licences to operate.
