The Business
Churchill is a great British success story. The company is very much the brainchild of chairman and chief executive Martin Long, whose thorough-going experience with UK mainstream insurers convinced him that British customers would respond well to genuinely excellent service. As a result, he asked Swiss giant Winterthur to fund a new company. Interestingly, even the name of the company was chosen because it embodies so many of its attributes: Britishness, trust, strength and perseverance.
The company began life in June 1989 with 88 employees selling car insurance policies, and added home insurance products the following year. Today, Churchill has over 1 million customers and its employees have burgeoned to now over 2,000. Exceptional service underlines that growth rate. Indeed, the company's vision is to deliver the unquestioned, publicly acknowledged, best customer service in the insurance industry world-wide. Martin Long believes that the company is already on the way to achieving that, and is probably already number one in Europe.
He is not alone in that opinion. A third of new business comes from recommendations and 85% of existing business is renewed. (Most competitors can only marvel at the renewal rate, as the industry average is below 60%). Customers send in 150,000 comment forms a year without any incentive to do so - and over 99% of those customers are highly satisfied.
Third-party endorsements are also not uncommon. The Halifax Bank Plc chose Churchill to sell motor insurance after a rigorous evaluation of the top 20 such insurers in the UK. In their words, "We felt that our customers deserved to have the highest standards of service". Furthermore, companies such as Shell have visited Churchill to study its approach.
