Abbey National - Your Motor Insurance Questions Answered
What is a policy excess & how does it affect me?
The excess is the amount you have to pay if you were to make a claim for loss or damage to your car. There are two types of excess that can be applied to your policy - voluntary excess and compulsory excess.
A voluntary excess can be chosen to suit your requirements. Increasing the voluntary excess on your quote will reduce your total premium.
A compulsory excess is the excess that Abbey National apply to your cover. Abbey National Motor Insurance standard compulsory excess is £100. Additional compulsory excesses apply to young/inexperienced drivers. The compulsory excess for windscreen claims is £50.
Please note that a voluntary excess applies in addition to any compulsory excess (with the exception of glass claims).
What is a No Claims Discount? If you do not make a claim during the year of your insurance cover, you are entitled to a discount on the following year's premium.
If you have three or more claim free years, you may protect your no claims discount by paying an additional premium.
How do I make a claim? Abbey National believe that their policy has been designed to ensure that when Abbey National Motor Insurance customers have to make a claim it will be as simple as possible.
In most cases one telephone call will be all that is required. The Telephone Claims Team is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
For windscreen or glass claims you only need to contact Autoglass direct.
What do I do if I change my car? If you are planning to change your car, simply call Abbey National Motor Insurance Customer Service Team.
Abbey National will discuss the details over the telephone and once accepted send you a new Certificate of Motor Insurance and Statement of Facts straight away.
Remember - you should always let Abbey National Motor Insurance know about any change in your circumstances as soon as possible. They can not cover you for a change they do not know about.
Does my policy allow me to drive abroad?
All private car insurance policies issued in the UK include the minimum cover required within any EU country (usually third party cover only). You must notify Abbey National Motor Insurance of an intended journey outside the UK, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man or the Channel Islands where you require normal policy cover on your vehicle.
A 'Green Card' (International Motor Insurance Card) will only be issued if it is required by the country(ies) which you will be visiting, or on your request.
Full details of the terms, conditions, restrictions and exclusions can be found within the policy booklet. A specimen copy of the policy booklet can be found on-line.
